Kaiyi Zhang, MA, LGPC

Therapist

Hi, I’m Kaiyi, a bilingual Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC) in Maryland. Growing up in China and later studying and working in the U.S., I’ve lived in a multicultural environment that shaped my understanding of diverse perspectives. My journey of exploring my passions and values led me to challenge societal and cultural stereotypes, fueling my desire to help others navigate their struggles with self-awareness and acceptance. As an Asian woman with both East-Asian and Western cultural backgrounds, I deeply understand the complexities of balancing multiple cultural expectations and the courage it takes to seek support. I know how isolating it can feel to face these challenges alone, and I’m here to provide a safe, warm space where you can feel truly seen, heard, and supported.

In my clinical journeys, I’ve worked with clients of a wide range of ages—from children, adolescents to adults—people seeking counseling for various but unique reasons. Some may feel stuck, as though there is no way forward, while others simply need a space to be heard and validated, something they haven’t found in other areas of their lives. Life often presents us with uncertainties, some within our control and others beyond it. But as one of my favorite Chinese poems says, “When the mountains and rivers seem to offer no way out, the willows grow dense, and flowers bloom in a new village.” Even when it feels like there is no way forward, a new path always emerges when we’re close at the tipping point. No matter where you are in your journey, I am here to support you with care and empathy, guiding you as we uncover new perspectives and skills together. With compassion and rapport, we’ll explore your challenges, navigate your vulnerabilities, and move toward healing, growth, and renewed possibilities.

I have worked with clients from diverse backgrounds, supporting them through a wide range of challenges, including depression, anxiety, communication, anger management, grief, trauma, cultural identity, interpersonal relationships, executive functioning, and life transitions. My approach is grounded in authenticity, compassion, collaboration, and cultural sensitivity, with an emphasis on meeting clients exactly where they are in their journey. For those navigating trauma, particularly when feeling chronically unsafe or triggered within the body, I offer a trauma-informed space that explores the intricate connection between the brain, mind, and body, fostering a path toward healing, safety, and self-regulation.

To tailor my approach to your needs, I draw from a variety of therapeutic techniques, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy. My approach is also informed by mindfulness-based, strength-based interventions, and integrated play and art therapies as needed. I offer both online and in-person individual and family therapy sessions for clients in Maryland, with support available in English and Mandarin.
